Role Description-

Arcadis are looking for a natural leader to head up and grow the Ecology practice in the UK.

Our Ecology team of approx 50 people have more than 30 years of experience undertaking ecological surveys and assessments, as well as the provision of advice on soil, land use, hydrological and sustainable drainage issues, arboriculture, ecosystem service, natural capital assessment, biodiversity strategies and metrics and cultural heritage. During this time, we have undertaken over 2,000 projects covering a wide range of environmental disciplines throughout the UK, in Europe and beyond, for public and private clients.

We won CIEEM’s large consultancy of the year award in 2020 and we are looking for a Discipline Lead to join our team, who is passionate about making a bigger impact not only in the ecology sector, but also by working collaboratively with other teams within Environmental Planning i.e. Landscape, Masterplanning and Urbanism, EIA, Town Planning, Cultural Heritage etc. Our mission is to improve quality of life around the world, by creating places of distinction and providing sustainable solutions that enhance the built and natural environment.

As a Discipline lead, one of your core responsibilities will be the leadership of our Ecology team and support Arcadis’ organic growth. They will be responsible for building and growing the team / ensuring technical excellence is maintained at all times and be accountable for winning and delivering work to budget and programme. Fundamentally they will set the tone – work hard – play hard and create a positive culture.

Role Accountabilities-

  • Creates an inspiring team environment with an open communication culture. Promote staff welfare, collate feedback and create a culture of open communication. Resolves and/or escalates conflict if necessary, promptly. Directs team building activities.
  • Conducts briefings to update the team on projects, workloads, wider engagement opportunities etc.
  • Generates and shares comprehensive and detailed reports about team performance, objectives, and deadlines, including metrics. Provides general encouragement to team members and to aspire to stretch goals and identify new training/skills areas.
  • Directs the promotion, pay review and hiring processes. Recognise and reward high performance.
  • Delivers the financial plan and liaise with senior leadership to ensure operational deadlines and goals are met.
  • Manage projects (particularly budgets and cashflow), attend meetings, provide advice to clients and manage bid production.
  • Provide technical advice on ecological issues, both to clients and internal stakeholders
  • Design research projects and contribute to the development of best practice with respect to training and survey standards, as appropriate.

Qualifications & Experience-

  • Leadership of people – providing direction with a commitment to actively nurture talent in others by helping people build their networks, and coach and mentor others and share knowledge
  • Sound technical knowledge of Ecological projects including ecological appraisals, EcIAs and Ecology Chapters for Environmental Statements and the ability to actively identify and pursue innovative and sustainable solutions to problems.
  • Commitment to building relationships with clients & colleagues, networking via industry events and seminars, and actively engaging in profile raising through e.g. internal/ external presentations or speaking at events.
  • The ability to add value to a client relationship and develop client accounts- Contribution to sales from identification of sell-on opportunities, bid support, Networking and client, etc.
  • Project Accountability- Leads and delivers projects. Achieves project objectives and stretch objectives as defined for each project via project appraisals
  • Cultivating insights and solutions, and innovating our service offering with clients and within Arcadis
  • Leading and engaging with the SHE agenda and embracing diversity, inclusion and well-being in the working environment
  • Supporting Community / Non-project initiatives that positively impact our ability to retain and attract top talent
  • Growth mindset and resilience to engage with changing ecology landscape.
