About This Role

This job owns, delivers and is accountable for all aspects of testing within Corporate Units. It ensures progression on the test strategy and framework implementation through each programme of work it undertakes. The job assists with test unit budgeting and expenditure, financial planning and forecasting, and securing required funding. It is also responsible for identifying skills needed for future Test Projects and ensuring that the resourcing, recruitment and succession planning is done to a high level within the area. The job builds, maintains and delivers domain-specific expertise within the area, ensuring that the team has an effective learning and development strategy.

You’ll Have The Following Responsibilities

  • All test services delivered by the unit, including the timely delivery, cost, quality, effectiveness and efficiency of all deliverables signed out of testing.
  • Defining and agreeing the scope of testing for all Corporate Units releases and non-release related IT deliveries.
  • Defining, owning, continuously evolving and implementing the business unit test strategy, leading and setting the direction to keep testing at the cutting edge of new thinking and industry best practice. .
  • Test unit budgeting, expenditure and financial planning and forecasting, and securing required funding. Budget responsibility 3 -5 M to 4 M GBP.
  • Team size between 50 and 250. This could be either BT FTE and/or subcon.
  • Negotiating supplier (e.g. sub-contract or software) costs to optimise value delivered to BT.
  • All aspects of sub-contract and other (test) supplier management, including delivery to time, cost and quality, reporting, and alignment with test strategy and delivery framework.
  • Resourcing & recruitment including succession planning. Building & maintaining domain specific expertise within the unit
  • The measurement, assessment and policing of the quality of input & output via shift left test strategy, Testing As A Service platform and cognitive test approach
  • Unit efficiency measure, continuous improvements & transformation aligned to strategy.
  • Management of key internal/external stakeholders to ensure visibility and engagement of Testing in all aspects of delivery
  • Manages a team to deliver complex and large scale technology development and solutions that provide business value and meet customer requirements, encouraging team’s use of innovative approaches and tools to solve high impact, complex problems.
  • Applies technical expertise to provide direction and make commercial decisions focused on wider converged technology lifecycle, setting roadmaps and defining and driving towards a desired future state.
  • Drives team’s understanding of customer and user centric technical process design, driving and implementing improvements to enhance the customer and user experience.
  • Sets working standards on processes to improve and drive standardisation and repeatability of technology solutions.
  • Reviews periodic reports and test statistics, and contributes to / validates activities to improve quality of deliveries signed out of Test.
  • Identifies key blockers to fulfillment of Test Unit objectives for their area, and derives / implements appropriate resolution plans.
  • Deals with exceptions and requests for assistance with risk mitigation / issue resolution as flagged to them by their team.
  • Analyses and then plans testing for major/complex functional or non-functional test projects. Allocates resources and manages these plans.
  • Full-lifecycle integration and testing activities within a programme for internal or external customers.

You’ll Have The Following Skills & Experience

  • Very high degree of business and commercial knowledge is required.
  • Extensive Professional Test experience
  • A Connected Leader who role models through their own behaviour and actions, embedding change by inspiring, coaching, holding them-self and others (including our offshore partners) to account and setting the right cultural tone for TSO
  • An individual who thinks strategically and able to blend technical, operational and commercial strategic considerations in their decision making.
  • Strong communication and senior stakeholder management skills
  • Track record of delivering releases of high-quality products
  • Experience of managing global teams (both direct labour and subcon) and being able to create a strong sense of ‘one team’
  • Deep knowledge of relevant technologies and the BT IT estate and modern software engineering practices and toolsets
  • Provides comprehensive technical expertise on emerging technologies within the test environment. Coordinates technology knowledge sharing with their team and the wider BT teams.
  • Leads collaborative and agile ways of working through projects and programmes effectively managing changing priorities.
  • Able to turn complex messages into effective and succinct communications
