At our Peterborough Campus we have a 500-person engineering team who design, develop, test and manufacture powertrain solutions for Caterpillar and third-party customers. This 5-year level 6 apprenticeship scheme will enable you to grow and develop your capabilities through combining university-based learning with on-the-job training. During the first 2-3 -years you will be on a rotational training programme and will be given the opportunity to experience different aspects of engineering, designed to provide you with an excellent foundation in the function.
Our Component Engineering team in our Peterborough facility is home to the Caterpillar Europe Research & Development Centre, a state-of-the-art facility that positions technical specialists where they are needed most to identify, build and perfect the technologies and solutions to help our customers be successful. Caterpillar invests more than $2 billion each year in research and development across the organisation, and our global engineering community, such as our Product Engineering and Development team, powers our efforts. This team employ those technologies and solutions to provide class leading power systems to both Caterpillar and other original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s). In addition, you will have the opportunity to witness the development of, for mass production, diesel engines, their associated after-treatment and their integration into machines used in power generation, construction, mining agriculture and marine.
Our Service and Customer Support team work to make our customers more successful every day by supporting the technical aspects of installing and caring for our products with end user throughout their lifecycle.
Day to day duties will include but not be limited to:
- answering technical questions from customers,
- supporting new engine installations into machines with customers,
- managing engine service and quality issues,
- producing engine service training material and literature,
- managing warranty claims
- visiting customers to provide field support,
- continually strive to improve the quality of our Products and Services working with our engineering teams to provide customer insight,
During the programme you will be rotating around different teams within the area but also in other functions such as Sales and Engineering to build a network and knowledge base to develop and be successful.
Upon successful completion of the rotational part of the programme you will move into a job role in one of the rotational departments for the remainder of the 5-year apprenticeship. This will be a position that will compliment your skillset and where you will continue to develop competencies to excel in that position.
During the 5-year apprenticeship you will also be studying to achieve your Level 6 qualification to support your practical learning. This will be in the form of a block release or online learning programme developed in conjunction with a nationally recognised institution.
What happens after the apprenticeship scheme?
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship scheme, you will continue in your chosen role where you will be offered a position within our world-class team with plenty of opportunity for long-term progression within one of the departments listed above. Many of our former apprentices now occupy senior management roles within our organisation, as career development is the foundation to all our apprenticeship schemes.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for people who are open minded, excellent problem solvers and those who can learn quickly. Applicants want to achieve a high-quality degree level qualification but do not want to go through the more traditional university route.
For this apprenticeship, the minimum requirement or expected requirement is to have:
- 5 GCSEs (or academic equivalents) at Grade C/Level 4 or above. Must include:
- Maths & English
- A Science or Engineering subject
- Plus at least one of the following:
- 96 points from 3 A-Levels – Math’s & Science subject
- Merit, Merit, Merit in an Extended Diploma or National Extended Diploma in Engineering or a related subject
NOTE: You can apply with predicted grades. If you’re successful at the interview stage, the job offer will be conditional on you achieving the required grades before September.
