Could you spare a few hours to offer friendship and support to someone who is otherwise feeling isolated in their own home? For some people who may be housebound or living alone, there can be large periods of time without having a conversation with another person. The aim of our befriending service is to reduce loneliness for our more isolated residents with a regular (usually weekly) visit to their home or by accompanying them into our communal areas to support and encourage the them to access services and facilities within the community. Befriending is a valuable and worthwhile experience for a volunteer. Feedback proves that, although it may only be sharing a cuppa once a week, our befriending service makes an enormous difference to our residents, helping them to be in contact with the outside world. An older person’s life is improved dramatically by having someone to share their thoughts and feelings with or being able to reminisce and share a joke. Our Befrienders are someone who has an empathetic ear and a non-judgmental disposition.

No formal qualifications are required, but we do need individuals that are comfortable conversing with people on a one to one basis, and are able to form a positive and supportive relationship with others. An ideal Befriender will be non-judgmental and be able to understand other peoples choices and their right to live their own l lives. They will be able to put their own views and beliefs to one side and be able to accept people for who they are and be supportive of them with patience and understanding.

The scheme as full disabled access. Out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed, including travel costs. Volunteers do need to be over the age of 18 years.
