About The Opportunity

Jacobs are currently recruiting an Equipment Qualification Engineer, with expertise in materials engineering and polymer science to join the Specialist Consultancy and Laboratory Solutions business. The role will primarily be based in Birchwood, Warrington with some visits to the South West and various nuclear sites.

This role provides professional, high quality engineering support to a range of Jacobs’ clients, with a focus on operational and new build nuclear power plants in the UK and overseas to ensure safety equipment is designed and qualified in compliance with regulatory expectations.

The role requires a high level of technical and organisational skills along with the ability to build strong working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

This will include

  • Working to the highest standards of Nuclear professionalism compliant with Health, Safety, Environment and other statutory requirements relevant to this role.
  • Participating, as part of a team, in equipment and materials qualification (EQ/MQ) programmes for components and sub-assemblies primarily used within the nuclear industry.
  • Development and implementation of EQ/MQ test procedures, interpretation of results and authoring and checking of associated documentation.
  • Lab-based analysis of polymeric materials including mechanical properties testing, thermal analysis and chemical characterisation of polymeric materials.
  • Providing accurate technical advice to engineers and designers in EQ/MQ and materials degradation and ageing mechanisms in nuclear environments.
  • Authoring and checking of technical EQ documentation.
  • Assessment of equipment and materials to support lifetime extension.
  • Maintaining a strong relationship with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Assisting in coordinating support from other external organisations
  • Provide technical bid support.
  • Supporting the business management team in growing future workload.
  • Regular trips to the South-west (Gloucester and Bristol) to understand capability and skills within the business as well as development of skills.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • A degree in Engineering or Material Science or equivalent subject
  • Nuclear Industry experience
  • Experience/knowledge of EQ/MQ activities within safety critical and highly regulated environments
  • Knowledge of EQ/MQ codes and standards
  • An understanding of materials vulnerable to degradation and ageing in nuclear environments (e.g. polymers, elastomers and rubbers) including practical failure modes due to radiation, wear and chemical compatibility
  • Experience of polymer characterisation techniques
  • The ability to work with multiple stakeholders
  • Interpretation of engineering data
  • Good reporting and presenting skills
  • Good communication and facilitation skills
