This is a fixed term position for 24 months including the training and work placements.

Here at LNER we have gone through some massive changes to help us deliver the best performing railway in the UK and also deliver the best customer experience across our historic route. As a Safety and Operations Apprentice, you will obtain learning experiences within all departments of Safety and Operations Directorate through a series of work placements. You will spend four months in each of the six departments and be involved in different aspects such as the development of the timetable, to the safety risk assessment process and the real time Service Delivery.

Alongside the work placements, you will gain a formal qualification in Business Administration Level 3. This is an 18-month course run by BePro which includes a formal End Point Assessment.

What would you be doing as a Safety & Operations Apprentice?

  • Completing placements within all areas of Safety and Operations to obtain valuable skills and experience in our service provision.
  • Developing a good understanding of the responsibilities within the Safety and Operations Directorate and how they all work together to deliver the service and interact with the wider business.
  • During each placement, provide support with specific, detailed tasks and activities within that speciality to help drive improvements.
  • Undertaking quarterly learning outcomes reviews with the Head of Department and Programme Manager.
  • Successfully completing the Level 3 Business Administration Qualification within the defined timescales.
  • Completing detailed, skilled activities in each department as directed by the team manager.
  • Obtaining competence in a variety of Safety and Operations systems.

Obtain demonstrable learning evidence of Safety & Operations activities in the following areas:

  • Safety & Environment
  • Operational Planning
  • Operational Delivery
  • Performance
  • Operational Programmes
  • Service Delivery

What do we need you to have to be successful in this role?

  • GCSE English and Maths (A-C) or equivalent
  • A strong desire to work within the rail industry in Safety and Operations.
  • The ability to communicate with and build lasting relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience in prioritising tasks and delivering to tight deadlines.
  • Drive and a proactive, self-motivated nature.
  • Excellent organisation skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Good analytical skills and project management skills.
  • Strong collaborative skills and the ability to be a good team player.
  • Experience of dealing with problems and a logical approach.
  • The ability to work on your own initiative.
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills for reports and presentations.
  • Highly proficient IT skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Experience within the rail industry (desirable but not essential).
  • Knowledge of Railway Operations (desirable but not essential).
