This position is a key part of the Shell Trading & Supply global network (STN), the principal trading and shipping business of the Group. STN is a truly Global Organisation with some 16 trading offices in such places as Houston, London, Singapore, Dubai, Bahamas etc.

What’s the role?

The Commercial Operator will be responsible for oil operations supporting the Low Sulphur Crude Trading desks based in both STASCO in London and Shell West in the Bahamas. The Commercial Operator will work alongside Traders / Trading Managers to optimise the deal portfolio to provide commercial benefits to the business. It is a fast moving and changing environment and the Operator will work alongside a diverse, multi-cultured group of people. The work is extremely varied according to the deals that they are operating at that time.

Some Key Items As Follows

  • Ensure that all obligations arising from the contract/charter party are carried out and seek to add value by exercising embedded commercial and logistical deal options by using a pro-active approach to problem solving, in tandem with the requests of the Traders.
  • Highlight any contract optimisation opportunities, thinking on your feet to deal with contractual problems (e.g. off spec cargoes, production delays, vessel delays, etc.) and ensuring that these are managed professionally and optimally for the trading business.
  • Deal with oil and freight counterparties, terminals, vessels, agents and inspectors on a regular basis regarding all post-deal activities ensuring operations are expedited and all necessary operational information is communicated in good time and documentary requirements are met.
  • Make oil and vessel nominations, prepare, and send voyage orders and monitor progress of vessels. Appoint independent inspectors, expeditors and ships agents.
  • Ensure that all oil and freight operational information is entered into Trading systems in a timely fashion and ensure that the trading position is accurate at all times and adequate records are kept to meet legal and fiscal obligations.
  • Understand the potential commercial impact of cargo/demurrage claims and ensure that the necessary commercial actions are taken to protect Shell’s business position both during and after the physical activity.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders such as Finance Operations to ensure that deals are correctly and timely settled and work closely with the Voyage Claims Analysts teams once live voyages are completed to ensure voyages are closed out in a timely manner and ensure provisions across the dex books are accurate.
  • Gain & use a full understanding of all operational aspects of the Oil/Shipping deals and Global Trading Network Policies and Guidelines and ensure all commercial contractual/policy obligations are complied with.

The Commercial Operator will manage the West African or US/Med operational portfolios on the LS trading desk but is part of the Crude Commercial Operations team. In time, this person should be willing to learn the other portfolios on the desk, to provide flexibility. A competent operator should be a good communicator, well organized with commercial awareness and team skills; to be pro-active in showing initiative and have or gain knowledge of all parts of the trading business.

The ability to prioritize from several potentially conflicting tasks whilst keeping a composed is essential to success in dealings with internal and external customers. We are looking for those willing to work to deadlines in lively, fast moving frequently changing environment where numeracy, attention to detail, hardworking whilst displaying initiative, which may extend to out of hours working.

What we need from you?

The Commercial Operator will have to be extremely adaptable, be able to work under pressure, be able to successfully prioritise work depending on current situations, and has to be a good team player. They will be expected to provide a professional service to the Low Sulphur Trading desk.
