This role represents an opportunity to work at the heart of the Energy Transition within Shell’s Mobility business, which supports deployment and scale-up of global programs and channeling of ideas and best practice. Where you fit in
Across the Mobility businesses 44,000+ sites in over 80 countries, Mobility Network is responsible for defining and implementing strategies at the global & country level and for the delivery of services across the lifecycle of the site in the areas of network development, sustainable operations, real estate, business development, ventures and engineering solutions.
Shell Mobility Networks Strategic Priorities Include The Following
- Deliver an ambitious growth agenda of ~5 bln USD by 2025 through development of future heartlands such as China, Mexico, Indonesia, India, Russia while maximizing value in its core markets in Asia, Europe, and Americas.
- Support the Energy Transition by reducing site CO2 emissions by 50%, increase the proportion of low emission fuels sold to 20%, and reduce carbon intensity in site design, all by 2025. This will be achieved by becoming No. 1 in EV charging at Mobility stations and destination locations globally through the deployment of scalable EV charging solutions alongside other alternative fuels e.g. H2
- Protect Shell’s license to operate by developing brilliant Mobility Network people, deliver Goal Zero (zero harm to personnel), drive process safety performance, and de-risk future Mobility Network Engineering solutions. You will have a key role to play in achieving these ambitions and delivering a competitive advantage to the Mobility business by driving world class performance across the innovation / design / deploy / operate engineering life cycle. All underpinned by Shell’s talent development, license to operate (HSSE) and ethics & compliance.
What’s the role?
This role is a key enabler in realising the Shell Recharge EV growth ambition through delivering fit for purpose, future proofed and cost efficient EV charging Solutions to be deployed on Mobility sites and Destination locations globally. The specific accountabilities for this role will be to lead Global Mobility’s engineering strategy on energy storage, focused on battery energy storage solutions (BESS) and their associated integration with the grid and charging products via both physical infrastructure and digital energy management systems (EMS). Specific accountabilities include:
- Own the technology strategy for the affordable, safe and flexible roll-out of BESS for Shell mobility sites in order to support various EV charging use cases e.g. high power on-the-go, and destination.
- Lead all global procurement activities (RFIs, RFPs) related to BESS and EV product solutions. Manage and maintain core strategic partnerships with key suppliers to Shell and deliver an evolving product roadmap.
- Develop proof-of-concept initiatives that deliver innovation in the BESS and EV charging arena. Drive these innovations to deliver scalable solutions for Shell’s global network.
- Define, review and update fit for purpose Technical Design standards & procedures for the deployment of BESS integrated charging solutions that meet customer and functional needs, minimise HSSE risk and optimum total cost of ownership.
- Be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for BESS and associated charging solutions at Mobility forecourts and destination locations.
- Develop business cases and total cost of ownership (TCO) models for investments made into BESS based charging solutions. Have the technical capability to factor in component level factors e.g. inverter efficiency into the models and biz. case.
- Have a knowledge of electrical distribution grids e.g. medium voltage vs. low voltage. Understand the factors involved in integrating BESS with the grid.
- Drive broader initiatives around energy management systems and their application at Mobility sites (including business cases associated with grid services and virtual power plants). Take forward standardisation initiatives in this space e.g. OpenADR, EEbus, SEP2.0 etc.
- Champion cross-functional collaboration and integration of EV charging within site design and specification, empowering frontline teams to match technical standards with customer value proposition (CVP) requirements and any associated value trade-offs.
- Collaborate closely with wider Shell EV teams including Marketing, Renewables & Energy Solutions, and Shell R&D (projects and technology PT) in developing and delivering BESS and EV charging road maps and e-mobility strategies.
- Undertake Technical assurance and line of defence (LOD) Audits in markets.
What We Need From You
- Technical education to first degree level and preferably professional qualification or chartership of relevant discipline synonymous with the role.
- Significant experience with battery energy storage solutions and/or EV charging solutions in a Engineering, Utility, Retail, Manufacturing, R&D or similar function with a proven background in developing and realizing innovative solutions.
- Specific on-the-ground experience with E-Mobility.
- Experienced internal and external stakeholder management. Should have a broad range of interpersonal skills to influence stakeholders without direct line responsibility.
- High level of interpersonal communication and engagement skills, through virtual working environment.
- Will potentially be required to work towards becoming a (Technical Authority) within Shell’s Discipline Control and Assurance Framework. Must be passionate about HSSE, and drive for designing out risk exposure.
