About the job

We are looking for a talented and passionate Software Engineer to join our Software Development team located at Hemel Hempstead site.

Reporting to our Software Engineering Manager, you will demonstrate great communication skills, a passion for knowledge sharing, and a desire to develop others by using your solid technical background.

To be successful you will have the ability to design and develop creative software architecture solutions to complex problems, apply extensive technical expertise and demonstrate a full knowledge of other related disciplines. You will guide the successful completion of major projects and may function in a project leadership role and determines methods and procedures on new assignments.

You will interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations and guide the successful completion of major programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Evaluate major design options against technical, business & project criteria.
  • Study complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
  • Work within an integrated multiple discipline team to resolve design issues.
  • Active participation & presenter in design reviews.
  • Plan project work submitting estimates to line management.
  • Report progress of all activities against target to project management & line management.
  • Keeping design records of software development in line with departmental requirements.
  • Organising personal multiple tasks and team workload.
  • Setup metric collection to monitor team progress against project timescales.
  • Design, simulate, test & record results to verify the system / sub system requirements have been met.
  • Work with appropriate software development tools such as source control, defect and task tracking applications.
  • Proposes improvements to the software development process by actively seeking new tools and techniques
  • Actively communicate with senior members within the local software team, other disciplines within the department and the wider Smiths Detection community to facilitate the work of the company.

The Individual

  • Software Engineering Degree 1st Class or 2:1 level or similar engineering degree
  • Experience of cloud-based hosting, using AWS or Azure
  • Excellent knowledge of the Software Development Lifecycle & Software Engineering techniques
  • Software developmental experience of complex technical products
  • Design and modelling experience
  • Awareness of cybersecurity issues & solutions
  • Experience of Agile development methodologies, particularly Scrum
  • Experience of networking issues and solutions
  • Experience of object-oriented programming
  • Clear communicator, innovator, and analyser
