Job Description
Under the direction of the Area Presidency, the area communication director is responsible for ensuring that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints communicates clearly and with one voice to priority audiences, thereby assisting the work of salvation and exaltation in the area. The director accomplishes this purpose by doing the following:
Increase understanding of His Church among all God’s children.
Build relationships with people, communities, and organizations to help achieve the mission of the Church, strengthen its reputation, and promote religious freedom.
Extend the reach of Church communication (e.g., identity, unified messaging, and communication channels) in a way that reflects a desire to understand and minister to the needs of priority audiences as identified by the Area Presidency.
Regularly manage the work of other employees (may include mixed workforce). Responsible, in partnership with HR, to hire or fire employees and recommends advancement, promotion or any other change of status of employees within their reporting line.

Unify Church communication at the area level:

The area communication director collaborates with all area departments, headquarters, and other regional and global area offices to execute on area and headquarters communication initiatives. The director is responsible for developing an area communication plan, with input from all relevant departments. The plan reflects the global prophetic and area vision, direction, priorities, deliverables, and timelines. This plan helps area councils, committees, and departments to effectively communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Help leaders, employees, volunteers, and partners understand audience needs, values and experiences to increase understanding:
Work closely with the Church headquarters Communication team as well as with the Correlation Research Division through the headquarters area relations manager to better understand how people view the Church in the area.
Share global identity and messaging guidelines with all relevant area departments.
Help implement a Christ-centered, audience-focused content strategy through effective channels including web, mobile, social, email, broadcast in close collaboration with area Publishing Services.
Identify, develop, and maintain key relationships of mutual understanding and trust with leaders, influencers, and organizations:
Work with Church leaders and communication councils at the national, coordinating council and stake level to develop, maintain and strengthen critical relationships with media, government, community, and interfaith leaders and organizations. These partnerships promote common beliefs, help lift communities and strengthen religious freedom.
Focus government relations and communication initiatives in priority countries.
Coordinate diplomatic corps outreach with Church headquarters, international government relations offices as well as all areas across the globe who may have interactions with key opinion leaders from the Area.
Brief Church leaders on global and area speaking points and ensure they are well-prepared for outreach visits and media interactions.
Extend The Reach Of The Gospel Of Jesus Christ By Coordinating And Assuring The Effective Use Of Church Channels At The Area Level As Well As Close Coordination With Global Channels That Reach Into The Area
Provide strategic oversight in close collaboration with the headquarters’ global channels team and regional efforts that may include multiple Latin American areas as well the area publishing services team. These channels include web, mobile, social, email, broadcast (e.g., general conference.)
Partner with departments to deliver their content and experiences through the most effective channels and work closely with the Publishing Services team to provide timely and accurate web and broadcast analytics data.
Work closely with headquarters departments such as the Missionary Department to assure support and alignment on efforts such as digital finding efforts for full-time missionaries.
Oversee the establishment and training of communication councils at the national, coordinating council and stake levels:
Work closely with leaders to establish and train effective communication councils that amplify the local voice of the Church in alignment with area objectives while adapting it to local needs.
Support the creation and execution of local communication plans based on area communication plan.
Provide media support for Church leaders by providing media expertise and spokesperson training and coordinating closely with headquarters on global issues.
Support, in conjunction with headquarters, senior Church leader outreach in the area as well as global events and campaigns. (e.g., temple events, holiday initiatives).
This role reports to a Director.
Required
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) in public relations or a communications-related field
- Ten years of professional-level experience
- Strong communication skills
- Experience in developing, designing, and executing strategic communication plans
- Active listener and learner with ability to understand the needs of a wide variety of audiences and communicate effectively to them
- Extensive experience with a wide variety of communication channels
- Strong understanding of public relations and relationship building
- Skilled at utilizing research methods and strategies to address practical problems
- Ability to communicate complex ideas and processes in a straightforward way to leadership and communication teams at all levels
- Excellent writing and editing skills both in [local language(s)] and English, preferably English at an advanced level
- Ability to think critically and solve problems
- Experience in crisis management
- Leadership and management experience with strong people skills
- Competency in the use of technology, including the Microsoft Office product suite

- Master’s degree (or its equivalent)
