About the job

Science and Technology Facilities Council

The Computational Biology Group, a part of the Computational Science and Engineering Division, develops and applies computational methods for understanding the molecular basis of life. We develop high performance scientific software for processing various kinds of experimental data, for organising, storage and processing of experimental and computer-generated data. We also have expertise in modelling and simulating biological systems.

Our work contributes to the fundamental understanding of how genes and proteins operate, and has applications in drug development, crop science and environmental monitoring. We are particularly interested in computationally ambitious problems and apply high performance computing and data intensive computing methods.

Summary Of Key Duties & Responsibilities

We are looking for a 12-week summer placement student to undertake a scientific communication project and focus on producing a new highly visual platform, highlighting the impact of the activities and research that two of our national consortia CCPBioSim and HECBioSim deliver. This will be an important extension to the already underway activities to deliver new next generation web platforms.

Are you interested in scientific communication? This is an extremely important part of what we do at STFC. It enables us to communicate our ground-breaking research and services with our wider professional audiences as well as the public.

This project will deliver a very highly visual and in-depth platform detailing case studies and highlights surrounding the successes of our consortia. The project will involve scientific writing and production of graphical media as well as interacting with our external research community.

The placement is available for both on-site working at the Daresbury Laboratory or is suitable for a hybrid style work pattern but not fully remote. This will be discussed with shortlisted candidates at interview.

To apply for this placement, you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Are in full time education at university and returning to university/studies following the placement
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
  • An enthusiasm for science and in particular the life sciences
  • An enthusiasm for scientific communications and outreach
  • An enthusiasm for scientific computing and its applications

  • A scientific/graphical design background or experience with producing online media or enthusiastic to learn

You are advised to submit your application as soon as possible as we reserve the right to close this vacancy once we have received sufficient applications.
