A vacancy exists within the Control Systems & Safety Interlocks Group for a talented graduate to contribute to the design and development of complicated distributed digital control systems.

The team is based at Daresbury Laboratory and forms part of the Engineering Technology Centre (ETC) within the Technology Department at STFC. ETC provides sophisticate mechanical, electrical and control system engineering solutions for a wide range of world-leading projects. The group is responsible for the design and development of pioneering control and safety systems for several particle accelerators and large scientific facilities both within STFC and in collaboration with other national and international organisations.

List Of Duties / Work Programme / Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to develop a range of skills covering real-time and embedded computing systems, system and application level software development, and device interfacing and integration techniques. They will work closely with experienced engineers on the design of new systems as well as helping to provide support to existing installations.

The post will suit a graduate with a curiosity about developing hardware and/or software systems to control real-world devices in a scientific environment.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria


  • Obtained bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2020, 2021 or due to receive it in 2022
  • Expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above
  • The right to live and work in the UK
  • Evidence of an interest in the practical applications of electronics and computing
  • Knowledge of at least one high-level computer language
  • Good presentation and verbal communication skill
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Self-motivation
  • Willing to undertake occasional UK and overseas travel.


  • Knowledge of managing Windows and/or Linux systems
  • Practical experience of computer interfacing techniques.
