The Faculty of Education is seeking to appoint a part-time (0.22FTE) PGCE Primary Teaching Associate. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to increase their involvement with Initial Teacher Education (ITE) by supporting beginning teachers at the start of their teaching career.

The Faculty of Education is recognised as one of the top ITE providers in the UK and the Primary PGCE Programme is a highly acclaimed course which has the highest national ratings. The Primary PGCE Programme prepares approximately 80 trainees each year for careers in early years setting and primary schools and provides high quality professional studies and subject specific teaching, alongside professional placements in partnership schools. The course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the PGCE itself. In addition, the course serves as the first year of a M.Ed. degree to which trainees can apply to complete the Master’s qualification after completing the one-year PGCE course.

The postholder will be an expert primary school practitioner with substantial, recent UK teaching experience of the 3-11 age range specifically and have a proven track record of mentoring beginning teachers against the statutory Teachers’ Standards (2012) and supporting colleagues’ professional development. They will contribute to the planning and teaching of the Professional Studies programme for Primary PGCE trainees and act as a Professional Studies group tutor. The work will involve teaching sessions about a wide range of educational issues and themes relevant to the teaching of Professional Studies, including values and principles, pedagogy, planning, assessment and behaviour management. The sessions will be lively, interactive, and research -informed, containing practical ideas to support trainees’ professional development in schools.

The successful applicant will act as a personal tutor, providing individual pastoral support for a small group of highly motivated Primary trainees working in the 3-11 age range. Significant time will be spent visiting Partnership schools to support the trainees with all aspects of their professional development and classroom practice, liaising with school colleagues and providing feedback on their assignments.

A professional qualification (Qualified Teacher Status), a bachelor’s degree qualification in a relevant subject and evidence of studying at Master’s level (or equivalent) is required. Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentational skills are essential alongside strong organisational, time management skills and a high level of attention to detail. As this is a Master’s level course, the successful applicant will be required to demonstrate how they engage with research and evidence to inform their professional practice. Due to the nature of this role in supporting trainees on placements at specific times of the year, a degree of flexibility is required for this 0.22FTE post.
