About the job

The Vacancy

Wates Smartspace is a national business, delivering high-quality fit-out, refurbishment and property upkeep projects, enhancing its customers’ physical assets and operating environments.

Smartspace works for banks, retailers, property developers, pharmaceutical and distribution businesses, broadcasters, owners and occupiers of commercial offices and public sector organisations. Project values range from £20k to £45m. The business has established a strong reputation for delivering projects to tight timescales and in live environments, frequently working around business-critical equipment.

In 2020 we delivered 550 projects across the UK for both public and private sector customers. These were a range of ‘CAT A’ (basic landlord fitout) and ‘CAT B’ (style, fittings etc) fitouts, extensions, structural alterations and critical resilience projects, often with our people working as an unobtrusive presence within live operational environments

Our business is growing and we are looking to expand our Work Winning team. We are currently recruiting for an experienced Estimator to join the team based out of any one of our regional offices in Warrington, London, or Luton.

This role will report into a member of our Work Winning Senior Leadership Team. Your main responsibility will be estimating bid costs for competitive tenders with varying levels of complexity, site constraints and differing live environments, ensuring we always submit a competitive net bid.

A Bit About You

You will be responsible for all aspects of the priced elements of a tender and have a good knowledge of sub-contractors and suppliers within our sectors. This will include quote preparations, compliance checks, working to challenging deadlines. You will work as part of a team and will also contribute towards risk assessments, identifying cost saving opportunities and working in accordance with our company operating standards. You will also:

  • Attend all key tender meetings including the tender launch meeting, provide overview of pricing model and documents required to be returned as part of the tender.
  • Benchmarking of key elements of the tender against current costs on site through liaison with commercial teams and previous bids.
  • Attend settlement meetings and present net tender and commercial opportunities. Capture tender settlement discussions and actions in the tender pack settlement notes.
  • Produce final pricing documents ready for submission post settlement.
  • Be experienced in using an estimating software package (Ideally causeway but not essential)
  • Prepare information packages for handover to the delivery team, if successful.
  • Undertake project debrief and attend first contract review meetings, eliciting feedback from sites, to improve construction and future tenders
