About the job

We are looking for an outstanding candidate to fill the role of Head Groundsperson to help us create the finest stage in world tennis at The Championships and champion excellence in grass court care within the UK and internationally.

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a central role in overseeing all sports turf operations at The All England Lawn Tennis Club – including planning, design, construction and maintenance – for current events and future projects across a number of sites.

The scope of the role is impressive, covering 86 grass courts in total, across The Championships, Qualifying Competition and Community Tennis Centre at Raynes Park. It will also oversee operations at the newly-built Indoor Tennis Centre, and help support the agronomy grow-in and management for 39 new grass courts as part of the AELTC Wimbledon Park Project, for which we have submitted planning proposals.

Alongside the Head of Courts and Horticulture, you’ll manage a highly motivated team of 27 groundstaff year-round, with an additional 12 seasonal staff.

What you will be doing

  • You’ll be central to the design and delivery of the strategic plan for the Groundstaff department with the ambition of creating the finest stage in world tennis and championing grass court care within the UK and internationally.
  • Have proven skills and experience to contribute to planning, design, and construction of 39 new grass courts for the AELTC Wimbledon Park Project (subject to planning permission) through to completion, and supporting future management plans including all grassed areas in the park.
  • Lead and manage the Groundstaff team across multiple sites to ensure day-to-day duties are undertaken to a consistently high standard encouraging collaboration within the team.
  • Design, develop and evaluate risk assessments and method statements for the Groundstaff department.
  • Oversee the care and daily maintenance of grass courts including mowing, marking out, operating pedestrian and tractor mounted machinery, spring and autumn grass court renovations; the care and daily maintenance of hard courts and covered courts; and the care and daily maintenance of ornamental areas, other grass areas and car parks.
  • Help to identify and control weeds, pests, diseases and disorders with experience of applying nutrition (granular and liquid).
  • Demonstrate strong financial/budgeting skills and be able to undertake end-to-end financial management.
  • Proactively support and engage with internal and external stakeholders to manage various projects.
  • Represent the organisation within the UK and internationally as needed.
  • Maintain health, safety and security in the workplace and complying with organisational procedures and guidelines.
  • Take personal responsibility to be in clean and presentable AELTC uniform during working hours.
  • Undertake any other duties within the department deemed necessary by the Head of Courts and Horticulture.

About you

  • You’ll have proven knowledge and practical experience gained in a professional environment with grass surfaces to international competition standard.
  • Proven leadership skills, knowledge and experience of managing a Groundstaff team across multiple venues.
  • Proven skills and experience to contribute to the planning, design, construction and maintenance of new grass courts and grassed areas across a large site.
  • Strong turf knowledge and qualifications to include level 4, or equivalent, in sports turf and PA1 and PA6A with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to design, develop and evaluate risk assessments and method statements.
  • Demonstrable experience in financial and budgeting.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Recognise that all Club events and matches are important to the image and the operation of the organisation and be able and willing to work extra hours and days in the build up to, and during, The Championships and other events.
  • Be organised, efficient, professional, reliable, able to meet deadlines with a positive and flexible approach, with strong verbal and written communication skills and numeracy to meet job requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to build good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including nationally and internationally.
  • Current full driving licence (Category B)

The Groundstaff Department also covers the Community Tennis Centre at Raynes Park and the Wimbledon Qualifying and Community Sports Ground at Roehampton, delivering year-round maintenance of grass courts, hard courts, football pitches, rugby pitches and cricket facilities including the daily care of ornamental, other grass areas and car parks.
